The Late Jurassic Sea

from the Dinosaur Collector

For Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs the Jurassic was a golden age.  Plesiosaurs are the really big reptiles of the Mesozoic Sea.  There were two major groups.  The long necked small headed plesiosaurs ate smaller sea creatures.  The pliosaurs has large heads short necks and ate what ever they wanted.

Marine crocodiles evolved several times and in the Late Jurassic we have the marine crocodile Metriorhynchus.  Liopleurodon a pliosaur was a top predator like today’s killer whale with a length of 39 feet according to the Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs.

Modern crocs use their tails not their limbs to swim. Metriorhynchus legs look like flimsy flippers in most reconstructions. This maybe a product of the deformation after fossilization. There are fossil finds that indicate a flat functional foot. There is no evidence at all that Metriorhynchus laid its eggs anywhere but on land so a more functional foot would have been useful.

According to to Walking with Dinosaurs Liopleurodon reached a length of 80 feet matching the size of modern whales.

Ophthalmosaurus (Eye Lizardwas about 15 feet long.  Its almost toothless jaw was adapted for catching squid and fish. It had the largest eyes of any Vertebrate fossil.  This indicates that it hunted in the dark depths of the oceans.
